Every year, it’s the same catchphrase: like the galette des Rois in January, lice are back at the start of the school year! But this year, for sure, we will not let ourselves be invaded by this nasty parasite! We give you all the advice to prevent the arrival of lice and exterminate them if they fall through the cracks.
A single watchword: PRE.VEN.TION!
Lice are very feared because once installed, we know it isn’t straightforward to dislodge them. So, as soon as the school launches a first alert and prevents them from reaching our toddler’s skull, we must already respect some simple but essential rules.
The goal is to avoid all contact with another child who is already infested. Even though lice don’t jump like fleas, they slide from hair to hair when heads are close. First tip: tie their hair! Long, loose hair is more likely to come in contact with other children’s hair. Transmission can also be done through clothing or objects: caps, hats, scarves, brushes, etc. Teach your child not to share this kind of business.
Also, watch out for school coat racks! These are often lice nests. On this subject, some schools have already equipped themselves with anti-lice hooks, an excellent French innovation: a coat rack with a repellent patch.
In prevention, there are also mild shampoos with essential oils, which can be used at will.
Our house recipe:
Prepare with:
- 150 ml of coconut oil
- Seven drops of refined lavender oil
Add a small amount to your child’s regular shampoo.
Among the recent innovations in prevention, we find 100% natural anti-lice elastics with essential oil extracts. In addition, they have pretty tart colors.
If you have the slightest doubt, carefully inspect your child’s head with a magnifying glass and with good light. Detangle her damp hair with a comb and look carefully for nits (which look like minor, oval dandruff) or lice.
Very practical, this metal comb is also equipped with a magnifying glass:
To be sure not to miss the slightest slow, there are now nit detection products. Colored in red, the nits are visible to the naked eye in 2 minutes!
HOW DO LICE GROW?
Like our dear mosquito friends, lice feed only on blood; this is called blood-sucking insects. Lice lodge in the head for their warmth and can live up to eight weeks. The female lays between 5 and 10 nits per day. It is while feeding that it causes itching: the first warning sign!
ANTI-LICE TREATMENTS
Once they are there, we act quickly! There are three ways to treat lice listed below you can choose one that works the best for your needs.
- The revolutionary method
- The natural process without insecticide
- The organic method
In addition, the anti-lice cap is a perfect accessory. Once the treatment is applied, the cap completely covers the head and smothers lice and nits.
However, most treatments are not recommended for children under three years old. Only certain products can be used if your child gets lice in the nursery.

Leave on for as long as possible under a warm, damp towel (minimum 20 minutes for an optimal effect) and, if possible overnight, wrapping your hair in cellophane paper. Rinse your hair and apply a gentle Low Pow type shampoo.
LICE: ANTICIPATE THE INVASION!
Avoid catching it
Everyone has their styling tool, brush, comb, hat, scarf, and not to exchange them.
If a loved one catches lice, we check the tribe and tie the princesses’ hair as quickly as possible.
How to check appropriately? We look at the hair near the root, especially behind the ears and the back of the neck, parting it to see if we find lice or nits.
Use lice comb through dry hair, over a white surface if possible, such as a sink or bathtub. If there are lice, they will fall into the sink or tub.
To get rid of Lice
With a product that kills lice and nits in one fell swoop. The directions for use must be followed precisely: it is essential to spread the product over the entire head and hair and apply enough to cover all the hair from root to tip.
There may be dead lice or nits in the hair after treatment, even after one or more shampoos. It does not matter. They can be removed with a lice comb.
At the same time as we treat the hair and the skull, we must rid what may have been in contact with the head and shoulders (sheets, towels, blankets, hats, etc.) of lice that may be there. We treat the laundry, the cuddly toys.
For this, everything can be machine washed at 60 ° C at least. You can also lock everything in a garbage bag for two days. At the end of these two days, the lice will be dead.
IF YOU SWITCHED TO LOW-POO?
When organic is taking an increasingly important place in our lives, many people are turning to more natural alternatives in their bathrooms.
Suppose the No-poo (method from the United States which consists of banning shampoo from the bathroom) seems too radical to you. In that case, you no longer want to use aggressive shampoos, especially without sulfates, without silicones; go to low-poo!
The purpose of this new treatment is to wash the scalp and the hair in total respect, based on a detox method, for all types of hair, from the most sensitive to the most frizzy. Conclusion: no chemicals and your hair regain lightness, shine, and hydration.
